Visollo Orchestra

Visollo Orchestra

Visollo is a student orchestra at the Helsinki Conservatory of Music. Its musicians range in age from 10-19, and play a variety of orchestral instruments, including strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, keyboards, and harp. Visollo provides young musicians an opportunity to play together in a traditional symphony orchestra setting early in their studies. Players not studying at the Conservatory may also audition for Visollo. During the academic year, the orchestra organizes several day-long music camps, and once a year there is also a longer weekend orchestra camp.   Visollo’s varied and extensive repertoire consists of classical symphonies, folk music, contemporary classical music as well as music for film and musical theater. The works are adapted to suit the players’ skill levels in order to ensure that every player has a chance to experience enjoyment and success. Soloists are drawn from the orchestra itself, students of the Conservatory’s vocational qualification program, as well as outside instrumentalists and singers. Visollo has premiered the works of several composers, including Esa Ylivaara and Juan Antonio Muro. The orchestra most recently premiered a work by Anna Nora, ”Soi Suomeni Maa,” which brought together the Conservatory’s choirs along with Visollo to celebrate Finland’s 100th anniversary with over 100 young musicians onstage.   Visollo performs about five times a year, and also performs at schools. The orchestra cooperates regularly with orchestras from other music institutes, including in recent years the music institutes of Länsi-Helsinki, Pakila and Keski-Helsinki, the Lahti Conservatory, and the Tallinn School of Music. Visollo also participates in many different events, festivals and competitions, and in addition to touring around Finland has also visited Switzerland and Estonia. In the fall of 2017, a new ensmble called Visollo Combo was formed, whose repertoire includes jazz, swing and popular music classics. Visollo Combo made its first appearance at the Conservatory’s Christmas Concert in 2017. The directors of Visollo are Mari Kortelainen, Tapio Tuovila and Juha Keikkonen.
