The Big Band of Jõhvi Music School
The Big Band of Jõhvi Music School began its work in autumn 1992 as a jazz group with eight members and Raivo Kallas as the conductor. Over the years it has developed into a big band with almost twenty musicians. During these years the collective has consistently participated both in regional and republican events and also in international festivals. They have taken part in European Youth Music Festivals for several times (in year 2000 in Norway, 2007 in Switzerland, 2009 in Hungary and 2009 in Austria); attended international Big Band Weekend in Loimaa in Finland and The Fjord’s Festival in Uddevalla in Sweden. In 2003 and 2013 took place a cooperative project with the Big Band of the music school of Loimaa and in 2009 with the chamber orchestra of the music school of Olecko in Poland.
In 2016 the Big Band participated at 39thInternational Meeting of Young Musicians – Bydgosczc Musical Impressions.
Under the leadership of the Big Band has already four times taken place a student event PasunaJass (The BugleJazz). The collective has the 1th category.
Raivo Kallas is the teacher of wind and percussion instruments in Jõhvi Music School.
In 1992 he established the music school´s Big Band and in 1996 the Jõhvi´s own Big Band. He also still is the conductor of both of the orchestras.
Raivo Kallas has twice been awarded by Cultural Endowment of Estonia for his active music-related work.
